That Time I Built a Desk…

With a new start of a semester, I decided I needed a new room set up. You know, better room vibes and maybe a place to actually do homework in. So I set out to find a desk, a small set of drawers and anything else I could find to make my room more me.

                      What is all this

After many hours of wandering around Target and buying too many unnecessary things, I found a desk, a chalk board to hang on the wall, a 2-drawer dresser, different size mirrors and candle holders for the wall. Now came the hard part: putting it all together. Help!

Fun fact about me: when I was 15, I went to a three week architecture summer camp in my hometown. No, I did not sign up for this willingly, but was more forced into doing it because I was too young to get a job, but too old to go back to camp. I “learned” how to use power tools to build a shed for the local gardening club. Not surprisingly, I didn’t do much while I was there because I was not into it. (There is a video that spans a few days and it shows me standing in the same place not helping out at all. #Sorrynotsorry. I wish I could find it but I can’t.)

That being said, you would think I would be able to put this desk and dresser together. However, nothing is more confusing than following directions of how to put furniture together and using a power drill. After many tries of trying to line up the nails and the pre-drilled holes of the desk and misaligning the edges on the dresser, I finally finished my project (after seriously breaking a sweat, this is so much harder than you think)!

There’s a few things I learned from my furniture building experience:

1. I am NOT good at using power drills.

2. Directions are hard to follow.

3. Even though it took me a long time to put together, I actually did it without a lot of help! Going forward, I know that I can go it again.

4. That being said, I hope I don’t have to build another desk or dresser again.

After a few finishing touches of some candles, picture frames and rearranging my other furniture, my room is complete and I couldn’t be happier. It finally feels like my space and knowing that I helped put it all together makes it more special.
