Real World: What to Wear to an Interview

The only thing harder than picking out what to wear to go out on a Friday night is finding the perfect outfit for your first job interview. If you are like me, you have a closet full of clothes but nothing professional to wear. No need to fear! I have done my research and have put together a few staples that will be great for any job interview you have.

As exciting (and sad) it is to be graduating from college, it is even scarier to think of making my way into the real world. After going to school for as long as I can remember, it is going to be a huge transition from going to class everyday and living in a house with 8 girls to having an apartment (hopefully) and working 9-5 everyday. An even bigger transition will be clothing – I am so used to wearing leggings, big comfy sweaters and boots all the time. Soon, it will be business casual Monday through Friday.

For advice on what to wear on a job interview, I consulted the three best things: my roommates, Twitter and the Internet. Here’s what I found:

“Wear a statement piece as an accessory so they remember you. Like a necklace or a fun bracelet.” BaubleBar has some great ones, as does Macys.

“No bright colors. It’s too distracting.”

“Something that won’t show sweat marks. I always get nervous and sweat and don’t want it to show!

“Very little make up. You don’t want to look like a raccoon. And no bright nail polish.”

Twitter (thanks to those who responded!):

The Internet:

The Limited has some great staples that you will have for years. I got black pants, a black blazer and a light green blouse. Perfect to wear together or seperately.

J.Crew has some great staples as well. For something different, this tank under a blazer with a necklace and this skirt.

Remember, keep it professional! Take into account what kind of job you are interviewing for (lawyer vs. design industry) and what season you are interviewing during.

Have fun shopping and good luck!

  1. Great advice! Best pieces of advice I ever got: Dress for the job you want, and always wear closed-toe shoes (or all the power will flow out your toes!).
